Avoidance is a strategy to protect oneself from real
or perceived painful experiences associated with particular people or places.
Avoidance of close relationships may of course lead to loneliness. Avoidance of
risky experiences may well be adaptive. Avoidance in people with PTSD may be
seen in response to the trauma-producing person or object such as a vehicle or
weapon.
