Compartmentalization in Psychology

Compartmentalization is a strategy to segment our lives in order to limit the distressing effects in one area of life. The home, worksite, school classroom, or other place may become a safe compartment where a person can deal with the tasks at hand without experiencing the distress they feel in another part of their life. The distress of dealing with a difficult relative may be set aside when entering work or during a “getaway” weekend. Similarly, the distress of dealing with distressing people or events at work or school may be set aside or compartmentalized in the comfort of home. Religious people may find peace when attending services in a sanctuary where they can set aside the distress of the week.
