Compensation is a strategy of dealing with negative
feelings of inadequacy by investing energy elsewhere. A person in a distressing
relationship may overinvest their time and energy at work instead of working on
the relationship. Religious people may compensate for distress in their family
relationships by investing heavily in ministry especially in cases where divorce
is taboo and a model household is expected.
