Introjection in Psychology

Introjection is a way of dealing with conflicts and stressors by accepting the messages of others as true of oneself. In the language of defense mechanisms, these messages are introjects. They are the projections of others toward oneself. If these introjects are routinely accepted, they can form a durable aspect of one’s self-identity. Young children usually take on the descriptions of themselves offered by their caregivers such as parents.
