The Overview Effect is a psychological phenomenon experienced by astronauts who have seen the Earth from space. It is the sense of awe and interconnectedness that arises from viewing the Earth as a whole, a tiny, fragile and beautiful planet floating in the vast expanse of space.
The term "Overview Effect" was coined by Frank White, an author and space theorist, in his book "The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution."
Astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect often describe feeling a profound shift in their perspective and a sense of connectedness to all life on Earth. They may describe feeling a sense of unity and interdependence, and a recognition of the fragility of our planet's ecosystem.
This experience has been said to have transformative effects on the astronauts, leading to a greater appreciation of the value of preserving our planet and its resources.
The Overview Effect is not only limited to astronauts but can also be experienced through virtual reality or simulations, which can provide a similar sense of awe and interconnectedness.
