The Illusion of Explanatory Depth refers to the limited knowledge people may have about how something works.
People tend to be overconfident in their knowledge and therefore vulnerable to the illusion when asked to explain how something works.
Asking people to explain something or unpack a concept can decrease confidence in some opinions based on a limited understanding.
